What we can't take, and where it goes instead

Some things can't go on a trailer with general rubbish. Here's what to do with each of them in Melbourne's north.

Checked 3 November 2026. Council fees and rules change, so check the source before you go.

Asbestos

Don't break, cut or move it. Older sheds, eaves, fences and bathrooms can contain asbestos sheeting.

  • Asbestos in Victoria recommends using a licensed asbestos removalist for any amount (asbestos.vic.gov.au).
  • WorkSafe says removal needs no licence only when the asbestos is non-friable, the area is 10 square metres or less in total, and the job takes no more than an hour over 7 days. Everything else needs a licensed removalist (WorkSafe).
  • It can only go to a landfill that takes asbestos, packed the way that landfill asks. Call first (EPA Victoria).
  • It never goes in a bin, a skip, a council hard rubbish pile or a council tip.

If we find something that might be asbestos on a job, we stop, leave it where it is and tell you.

Household chemicals and fuel

Old pool chemicals, pesticides, weedkiller, old petrol, brake fluid and the like go to a Detox Your Home collection event. It's free and open to anyone in Victoria. Register for an event first. It's now run by the state environment department, as Sustainability Victoria has closed. Motor oil isn't taken there, but Hume's Bolinda Road tip takes up to 10 L free.

Paint

House paint goes to a Paintback drop-off, free, up to 100 L a visit in containers of 20 L or less, in the original tins. Near the north that's Hume's Bolinda Road tip in Campbellfield and Darebin's tip in Reservoir. Aerosols, two-pack and automotive paint aren't Paintback items; spray and automotive paint can go to Detox Your Home.

Gas bottles

Empty BBQ gas bottles are free at Hume's Bolinda Road tip, and Darebin's tip takes them for $12. A swap-and-go exchange takes an old bottle when you buy a full one. The Wollert landfill and council hard rubbish don't take them.

Medical waste and needles

These need a sharps or medical waste service, never a rubbish load. If you find needles on your property, don't pick them up with your hands; call your council for advice.

What we do take

Pretty much everything else from a home, shed or yard, including e-waste and whitegoods, which we take to proper drop-off points. See everything we take.
