How to get rid of an old mattress in Melbourne's north

Mattresses are bulky, most charities won't take them, and the tips charge for each one. Here are your options.

Checked 3 November 2026. Council fees and rules change, so check the source before you go.

Council hard rubbish

All three councils take mattresses in a booked hard rubbish collection. Whittlesea lets them go out over the usual size limits. Merri-bek takes one mattress and one base per household. Hume takes them as part of your yearly voucher allowance.

Drop it at the tip

  • Hume's Bolinda Road and Sunbury tips charge $40 a mattress or base (fees from 1 August 2026), and Hume residents' vouchers cover up to 4 mattresses a year (Hume).
  • On Hume Clean Days mattresses are free for Hume residents. The next is 5 and 6 December 2026.
  • Darebin's tip in Reservoir charges $37 a standard mattress (Darebin).
  • The Wollert landfill takes mattresses for a fee (Heidelberg Materials).

Can I donate it?

Usually not. Red Cross shops list mattresses as something they can't take, and Vinnies won't take stained bedding. If yours is near new and clean, call your local op shop and ask before you take it in.

Or we take it

We pick mattresses up from the bedroom, with the base and frame, and take them to a transfer station. See mattress removal.
